Sister and brother Texas Gladden and Hobart Smith were born in Saltville, (Smyth & Washington Counties) Virginia (1895 and 1897 respectively). Texas had a known repertoire of some two hundred songs. Hobart was a multi-instrumentalist (fiddle, guitar, banjo, and piano). They were already well known performers when Alan Lomax recorded Hobart in 1942 and both went on to have commercial releases separately and together for Folk-Legacy, Folkways, and Rounder Records. These extensive interviews with them were recorded by Alan Lomax during a 1946 visit they made to New York to perform at Columbia University.
