Betty Smith (b 1926) of Madison County, North Carolina has been playing, preserving and teaching Appalachian folk songs for more than 30 years She has performed many times at Berea's Celebration of Traditional Music Betty has received numerous ballad and dulcimer awards and in 1982 received the Bascom Lamar Lunsford Award for significant contributions to the folk traditions of the southern mountains David Holt (b1946) is originally from Gatesville (Coryell County), Texas He has lived many years in western North Carolina where he has dedicated himself to performing and preserving traditional music and stories of the region He plays ten acoustic instruments and has released numerous recordings of traditional mountain music and folktales
