Tale told by Berzilla Wallin, at the Berea College Celebration of Traditional Music on 11-01-80
The Wallin Family of Madison County, North Carolina have been singing and passing down (mostly unaccompanied) traditional ballads for many generations Their singing was first documented in 1916 when British folklorist Cecil Sharp visited Madison County and transcribed ballads from Mitchell Wallin (1854-1932) Three decedents of Mitchell Wallin are heard on these recordings: Doug Wallin (1919-2000), his mother, Berzilla (1892- 1986), and her sister, Dellie Chandler Norton (1898-1993) Doug was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1990 Also in 1990, Dellie received the North Carolina Heritage Award
