Slim Miller (1898-1962), born Homer Edgar Miller, from Lizton (Hendricks County) Indiana, was an old time fiddler working for over 20 years at Renfro Valley Miller got his start after high school playing with local orchestras in Indianapolis before moving to Knoxville to find work on local radio stations In 1932 he got his first big break joining the WLS National Barn Dance in Chicago with the help of John Lair Miller followed Lair to Cincinnati in 1937 and to Kentucky in 1939 for Lair's Renfro Valley Barn Dance and staying with Lair for over 20 years Before his death from cancer in 1962 he and his wife Clara operated the Scenic View Motel near Renfro Valley The Renfro Valley Barn Dance was a radio program developed by John Lair in 1937 in Cincinnati, Ohio, later moving to Dayton, Ohio before settling in Renfro Valley in Rockcastle County, Kentucky in 1939 Other of Lair's programs originating from the Valley included the Renfro Valley Country Store, the Renfro Valley Gatherin'
