Portion of an address to Berea College students and faculty as part ot the College's observance of Black History Month, September 14, 1975
Julian Bond served in the Georgia State House of Representatives 1967-1974 and the State Senate 1975-1987 His great-grandmother was a slave in Kentucky His grandfather, James Bond, was a 1892 Berea graduate and served as a Trustee from 1896 to 1914 When Lincoln Institute opened in 1912, James Bond served as its financial officer, and he enrolled his children there His youngest son, Horace Mann Bond, earned a doctorate and was a distinguished educator, serving as president of two colleges Horace was the father of Julian Bond
