Long Time Traveling
Jean Ritchie is a Kentucky born folksinger who preserved and passed on the strong musical traditions of her Perry County family. She moved to work in New York City in 1946 after college graduation with a degree in Social Work. There opportunity, technology, and personality converged to allow her to move her family's music beyond scholarly written renderings by bringing it to life through public performance and sound recordings. These recordings in the Berea collection were made by folklorist Alan Lomax during 1949 and 1950.
